Jeff, a CASA volunteer, took the nine-year-old boy he was advocating for, Mitchell, out to the park for their weekly visit. Fairly quickly, Jeff noticed Mitchell wasn’t acting normal, he was tired, disengaged, and quiet. Jeff knew the child was on medications for ADHD, so after their visit, he mentioned to Mitchell’s caretaker that he may need to be reevaluated. Jeff followed up with the social worker, and it was discovered that Mitchell’s medications were being kept in a Tupperware container—no labels, directions, or warnings. That situation could have been fatal for Mitchell.

CASA Jeff followed up to make sure Mitchell’s caretakers knew what medications he was taking, and how much he should be taking. He worked with the social workers, teachers, and doctors to make sure the medications were working the way they were supposed to. His diligent work and attention to detail helped keep Mitchell safe in the home he was living in. CASA volunteers are doing their part to break the cycle of abuse, and assure that these children find a forever home where they are safe.

Preventing child abuse from ever happening is ideal, but when abuse does happen, our volunteers are there for the child and speak up when something doesn’t feel right.
